You may have heard about the heckler in Congress yesterday, the one who interrupted Prime Minister Netanyahu. Without knowing anything about her, I was very impressed with Netanyahu’s response to her:
I think it’s a badge of honor, and so should you, that in our free societies you can have protests. You can’t have these protests in the farcical parliaments of Tehran or Tripoli. This is real democracy!
So here’s where it gets interesting. Each reporter saw it in as a whole different elephant.I’m not the only one who saw this. Honest Reporting does an excellent job sorting out the sordid details of poor journalism, but I’m looking at this particular part of the story of the heckler.
JPost didn’t bother listing the woman’s name, but they did point out the incomplete love in the room from some of the congressmen (Senators, in this case) and from Michael Oren. So interesting.
And then there’s Arutz Sheva, the paper that supports exactly what the Palestinians, Obama, and apparently Netanyahu, are against, not ceding one dunam of holy land. They name names.
One person heckled Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu in his speech to Congress Tuesday. The voice belonged to none other than a left-wing Jewish CODEPINK activist, who was quickly whisked out of the Congressional chambers after shouting, “Stop Israeli war crimes.”
Rae Abileah, in her late 20s and one of the group’s national organizers, made her comment as the Prime Minister congratulated U.S. President Barack Obama for the elimination of Osama Bin Laden, adding “Good riddance”!
After the incident, she said in a statement released by CODEPINK, “Prime Minister Netanyahu says that the 1967 borders are indefensible. But what is really indefensible is the occupation of land, the starvation of Gaza, the jailing of dissenters and the lack of equal rights in the alleged Israeli democracy. As a Jew and an American taxpayer, I can’t be silent when these crimes are being committed in my name and with my tax money.”
The Prime Minister, who has faced much worse taunts in Israel’s contentious Knesset, laughed off the remark by praising the United States for being a “real democracy,” unlike the “farcical” regimes of Iran and elsewhere.
He suggested that Congressmen watch the Knesset in action to get a real taste of what heckling is like.
And now we get more interesting, in the land of the elephants.
Ynet News, which is more balanced than Ma’ariv for the Israeli mainstream papers, had this headline:
‘AIPAC activists beat me’
Jewish woman who disrupted PM’s Congress speech says members of Jewish lobby attacked her
At the end of the article, that goes on and on about how nobly this lady acted against the inhumanity, it says:
Abileah was born in California to an Israeli man from Ramat Gan. She declined to comment on her family’s feelings over her outspokenness against Israel.
She says she has chosen to focus her protest against AIPAC in the US because “it is a lobby that silences any opposing opinion”. Abileah added that financial pressure should be leveraged against Israel and “its leaders should be persecuted”.
Okay, now my curiosity is really piqued. So I google her and after all the stuff about this CODEPINK, it links to a book chapter that she wrote:
Rae Abileah wanted to join the military when she was in high school. After her abusive father left her family, she didn’t know how she could ever afford college without enlisting. But Rae found alternatives. In this chapter she discusses other ways to get college money, adventure and travel without risking life and limb.
Oh now wait a minute.
Here’s where the title comes in.
Could it be, possibly, that this girl is so angry at her abusive (Israeli) father that she strikes out against Israel and its supposed abuse?
Let it sink in and then let me know what you think.
